The setup

The blade is DHS's Q968, the composite Hurricane King sold as the National version: five wood plies with two layers of yellow-black arylate-carbon set inside, next to a thick ayous core. It is an inner-fibre blade — 6.0 mm and around 90 g — so the carbon does not fire the moment the ball lands; the face holds it a beat longer, and the kick arrives later in the swing and harder. DHS tunes this one for the 40+ ball and the national team: a high forehand threshold, and a backhand that blocks and counters with very little fuss, which is where Wang Chuqin's game is built. The all-wood Hurricane King of the same name is a different blade. The shop lists the Q968 with the other blades on the price table.

On the forehand he plays Hurricane 3 National, the blue-sponge version: the same tacky topsheet as the commercial Hurricane 3, with the harder national-team sponge behind it. The surface grips the ball so a serve or a short push can be loaded without much forward motion, and the sponge gives the ball back on a full swing rather than on a half one. The shop carries it, and the rest of the Hurricane 3 line, on the Rubbers price table.

On the backhand he plays Hurricane 8, DHS's grippier sheet: a less tacky topsheet than the 3 on a livelier sponge, so the ball leaves higher and with less effort. It keeps the Chinese tacky feel on that wing without asking for the same full swing the forehand rubber does.

The pairing is the classic Chinese one — the forehand rubber that rewards the biggest swing, the backhand rubber that makes the same family playable in a shorter stroke. Both rubbers are on the Rubbers price table; the blade is on the Blades price table.
