The setup
The blade is his signature Fan Zhendong ALC, Butterfly's outer-ALC reissue of the Viscaria structure — the Arylate-Carbon outside the core, so it fires early and rewards a compact, forward swing. He came to it from the Viscaria itself, and before that the Infinity VPS V.
On the forehand he plays DHS Hurricane 3 National in the blue sponge, the national-team sheet: the tacky Hurricane 3 topsheet with the hard blue sponge behind it, the same family our Rubbers price table carries as Neo Hurricane 3 National. The surface holds the ball long enough to load a serve or a short push without much forward motion, and pays that back on a full swing. What the sponge colour changes is set out in our blue vs orange sponge guide.
On the backhand he plays Dignics 09C, Butterfly's mildly tacky hybrid: the one sheet that bridges the tacky forehand he grew up with and the clean, fast European-style backhand. Before it he had Tenergy 05 on that wing.
The pairing is the route the Chinese team has largely settled on at the top: the tacky national forehand for the first ball and the biggest swing, a hybrid on the backhand for the counter and the block. Both rubbers are on the Rubbers price table; the blade is on the Blades price table.
